About the psychotherapeutic framework
To make a post about something other than Israel, Gaza or Ukraine. A little psychological psychotherapy geekery. This holiday season, I have more time to reflect on my practice. I have a client who at times becomes very dysfunctional. I wonder what it is that might help?
This morning it struck me that it's more than just specific therapeutic techniques. It is very much the whole setting. The stability of the relationship. That I am there and offer a space to talk. Even when things are chaotic. With a fundamentally appreciative attitude towards the client, where we try to make sense of the chaos. That the psychotherapeutic situation creates a framework for the client that hopefully gathers and heals the experiences. Making them understandable and more "bearable" instead of unbearable. The therapeutic context creates a space where the psychologicalmaterial can find a bearing. Where the extremes can be brought together and considered. So that the client can hopefully find their way through the turmoil, find some peace. If possible, I help create a center point so that there are not only extremes. As far as I can see, it's also very much the framework that heals.
